Grade 7 Percent Increase and Decrease Practice Test

Build Grade 7 Math skills with five 10-question practice tests on percent change, increase and decrease multipliers, discounts, tax, salaries, populations, successive changes, and original values.

Percent Increase and Decrease Practice Tests

These Grade 7 Math practice tests help students calculate percent change and apply percentage multipliers. Students work with increases, decreases, discounts, tax, salaries, populations, original values, successive changes, and real-world price and budget situations.

Skills covered

  • Calculating percent increase and percent decrease from original and new values
  • Using increase multipliers such as 1.15 and decrease multipliers such as 0.80
  • Finding a new value after a percentage increase or decrease
  • Finding the original value from a final value and a percentage change
  • Applying discounts, sales tax, salary changes, population changes, and budgets
  • Analyzing successive percentage changes and explaining why they are not always additive

How to use these practice tests

Use the original amount as the denominator when calculating percent change. For an increase, multiply by (1+r); for a decrease, multiply by (1-r), where (r) is the decimal rate. For successive changes, apply each multiplier in order and keep the intermediate value before applying the next change.

1. QuestionMultiple choice

A value changes from 50 to 60. What is the percent increase?

Please select an answer first.

Correct answer: A

The correct answer is 20%20\%.

  1. Identify the original and new values: Determine which value is the original amount, which is the new amount, and whether the change is an increase or a decrease.
  2. Apply the percent relationship: The increase is 10. Divide by the original value: 60−5050=1050=0.20=20%\frac{60-50}{50}=\frac{10}{50}=0.20=20\%.
  3. Check the result: Use the original value as the denominator for percent change and verify the direction and size of the change.

The increase is 10. Divide by the original value: 60−5050=1050=0.20=20%\frac{60-50}{50}=\frac{10}{50}=0.20=20\%.

2. QuestionMultiple choice

A value changes from 80 to 68. What is the percent decrease?

Please select an answer first.

Correct answer: B

The correct answer is 15%15\%.

  1. Identify the original and new values: Determine which value is the original amount, which is the new amount, and whether the change is an increase or a decrease.
  2. Apply the percent relationship: The decrease is 12. Divide by the original value: 80−6880=1280=0.15=15%\frac{80-68}{80}=\frac{12}{80}=0.15=15\%.
  3. Check the result: Use the original value as the denominator for percent change and verify the direction and size of the change.

The decrease is 12. Divide by the original value: 80−6880=1280=0.15=15%\frac{80-68}{80}=\frac{12}{80}=0.15=15\%.

3. QuestionMultiple choice

A value changes from 120 to 150. What is the percent increase?

Please select an answer first.

Correct answer: C

The correct answer is 25%25\%.

  1. Identify the original and new values: Determine which value is the original amount, which is the new amount, and whether the change is an increase or a decrease.
  2. Apply the percent relationship: The increase is 30, and 30120=0.25=25%\frac{30}{120}=0.25=25\%.
  3. Check the result: Use the original value as the denominator for percent change and verify the direction and size of the change.

The increase is 30, and 30120=0.25=25%\frac{30}{120}=0.25=25\%.

4. QuestionMultiple choice

A value changes from 200 to 170. What is the percent decrease?

Please select an answer first.

Correct answer: D

The correct answer is 15%15\%.

  1. Identify the original and new values: Determine which value is the original amount, which is the new amount, and whether the change is an increase or a decrease.
  2. Apply the percent relationship: The decrease is 30, and 30200=0.15=15%\frac{30}{200}=0.15=15\%.
  3. Check the result: Use the original value as the denominator for percent change and verify the direction and size of the change.

The decrease is 30, and 30200=0.15=15%\frac{30}{200}=0.15=15\%.
