1. QuestionMultiple choice

A triangle has base 8 and height 5. What is its area?

Please select an answer first.

Correct answer: A

The correct answer is 20.

  1. Identify the SAT task: Determine whether the question asks about a central idea, evidence, grammar, algebra, data, geometry, or another tested skill.
  2. Use the evidence or equation: Triangle area is one-half times base times height: one-half times 8 times 5 equals 20.
  3. Check the answer: Review the wording, calculation, and units before selecting the final response.

Triangle area is one-half times base times height: one-half times 8 times 5 equals 20.

2. QuestionMultiple choice

A circle has radius 3. What is its circumference in terms of pi?

Please select an answer first.

Correct answer: B

The correct answer is 6 pi.

  1. Identify the SAT task: Determine whether the question asks about a central idea, evidence, grammar, algebra, data, geometry, or another tested skill.
  2. Use the evidence or equation: Circumference is 2 pi r, so 2 times pi times 3 equals 6 pi.
  3. Check the answer: Review the wording, calculation, and units before selecting the final response.

Circumference is 2 pi r, so 2 times pi times 3 equals 6 pi.

3. QuestionMultiple choice

A right triangle has legs 6 and 8. What is the length of the hypotenuse?

Please select an answer first.

Correct answer: C

The correct answer is 10.

  1. Identify the SAT task: Determine whether the question asks about a central idea, evidence, grammar, algebra, data, geometry, or another tested skill.
  2. Use the evidence or equation: By the Pythagorean theorem, the hypotenuse is the square root of 36 plus 64, or 10.
  3. Check the answer: Review the wording, calculation, and units before selecting the final response.

By the Pythagorean theorem, the hypotenuse is the square root of 36 plus 64, or 10.

4. QuestionMultiple choice

A data set has values 4, 6, 8, 8, and 9. What is the median?

Please select an answer first.

Correct answer: D

The correct answer is 8.

  1. Identify the SAT task: Determine whether the question asks about a central idea, evidence, grammar, algebra, data, geometry, or another tested skill.
  2. Use the evidence or equation: The middle value in the ordered list is 8.
  3. Check the answer: Review the wording, calculation, and units before selecting the final response.

The middle value in the ordered list is 8.

5. QuestionMultiple choice

A population grows from 2,000 to 2,400. What is the growth factor?

Please select an answer first.

Correct answer: A

The correct answer is 1.2.

  1. Identify the SAT task: Determine whether the question asks about a central idea, evidence, grammar, algebra, data, geometry, or another tested skill.
  2. Use the evidence or equation: Divide the final value by the initial value: 2,400 divided by 2,000 equals 1.2.
  3. Check the answer: Review the wording, calculation, and units before selecting the final response.

Divide the final value by the initial value: 2,400 divided by 2,000 equals 1.2.

6. QuestionMultiple choice

A box has length 4, width 3, and height 2. What is its volume?

Please select an answer first.

Correct answer: B

The correct answer is 24.

  1. Identify the SAT task: Determine whether the question asks about a central idea, evidence, grammar, algebra, data, geometry, or another tested skill.
  2. Use the evidence or equation: Volume is length times width times height: 4 times 3 times 2 equals 24.
  3. Check the answer: Review the wording, calculation, and units before selecting the final response.

Volume is length times width times height: 4 times 3 times 2 equals 24.

7. QuestionMultiple choice

If a line is perpendicular to a line with slope 1/2, what is the slope of the perpendicular line?

Please select an answer first.

Correct answer: C

The correct answer is −2.

  1. Identify the SAT task: Determine whether the question asks about a central idea, evidence, grammar, algebra, data, geometry, or another tested skill.
  2. Use the evidence or equation: The slopes of nonvertical perpendicular lines are negative reciprocals.
  3. Check the answer: Review the wording, calculation, and units before selecting the final response.

The slopes of nonvertical perpendicular lines are negative reciprocals.

8. QuestionMultiple choice

A survey of 120 students finds that 30 percent prefer option A. How many students prefer option A?

Please select an answer first.

Correct answer: D

The correct answer is 36.

  1. Identify the SAT task: Determine whether the question asks about a central idea, evidence, grammar, algebra, data, geometry, or another tested skill.
  2. Use the evidence or equation: Thirty percent of 120 is 0.30 times 120, which equals 36.
  3. Check the answer: Review the wording, calculation, and units before selecting the final response.

Thirty percent of 120 is 0.30 times 120, which equals 36.
