These Grade 5 English Language Arts practice tests help students combine short sentences into clear, precise, and varied sentences. Students use coordinating and subordinating conjunctions, relative clauses, appositives, introductory phrases, prepositional phrases, and correct comma placement.
Skills covered
- Joining complete sentences with and, but, or, and so
- Showing cause, contrast, time, and condition with subordinating conjunctions
- Using relative clauses with who, that, and which
- Adding appositives and descriptive phrases
- Using introductory phrases and commas correctly
- Combining ideas without fragments, run-ons, or unnecessary repetition
- Preserving the original meaning while improving sentence fluency
How to use these practice tests
First identify the relationship between the ideas: addition, contrast, cause, time, or condition. Then select a joining word or phrase and read the result aloud. Check that every sentence has a complete thought, the comma is in the right place, and the meaning has not changed.
