Prefixes, Suffixes and Roots Practice Tests
These Grade 3 English Language Arts practice tests help students use word parts to understand unfamiliar vocabulary. Students identify prefixes at the beginning, suffixes at the end, and roots or base parts that carry a word’s central meaning.
Skills covered
- Recognizing common prefixes such as un-, re-, pre-, mis-, sub-, and dis-
- Recognizing common suffixes such as -ful, -less, -er, -ly, -able, -ment, and -ness
- Using roots such as bio, geo, port, spect, aud, struct, tele, and scrib
- Combining word-part meanings to understand new words
- Using roots and affixes as vocabulary clues
How to use these practice tests
Separate the word into parts and ask what each part contributes. A prefix usually changes the beginning meaning, a suffix can change the word’s job or meaning, and the root often gives the central idea.
